Working is freelance isn’t for everyone. It comes with it’s own pressures and often freelancers don’t realise they don’t like it until they’ve been doing it a while. So to avoid some tears and potential mistakes, here’s some of the disadvantages.
- Isolation. No water cooler, no work mates, no after work drinks.
- You, not the accounts department, deal with the tax man directly.
- Irregular work flow. You’re constantly looking for work.
- Irregular income. A consequence of above.
- No employment benefits or holiday pay.
- The boundaries between home and work are lost.
- Being your own boss, and accounts dept, marketing dept, sales dept and general dogsbody.
- Distractions. The kids, YouTube, Sunday afternoon football.
In the interests of fairness, there are many upsides, here’s some of them.
