7 disadvantages of working freelance

by Mike Garner on 30/09/2009

Working is freelance isn’t for everyone. It comes with it’s own pressures and often freelancers don’t realise they don’t like it until they’ve been doing it a while. So to avoid some tears and potential mistakes, here’s some of the disadvantages.

  1. Isolation. No water cooler, no work mates, no after work drinks.
  2. You, not the accounts department, deal with the tax man directly.
  3. Irregular work flow. You’re constantly looking for work.
  4. Irregular income. A consequence of above.
  5. No employment benefits or holiday pay.
  6. The boundaries between home and work are lost.
  7. Being your own boss, and accounts dept, marketing dept, sales dept and general dogsbody.
  8. Distractions. The kids, YouTube, Sunday afternoon football.

In the interests of fairness, there are many upsides, here’s some of them.
